Summary

Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses is a contemporary eco-friendly country house hotel located only 12 km away from the famous eco-marine town of Kaikoura on New Zealand's South Island. 

This unique retreat is comprised of 5 luxurious tree houses set 10 m up in the canopy of native Kanuka, 4 sumptous lodge suites and the Olive House suite. Each of the houses, packed in native wood and copper shingles, merges naturally and harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

All the food at Hapuku Lodge is made in the lodge kitchen using the finest produce sourced from the Lodge's own herb and vegetable gardens, free-range chickens and olive groves, as well as local market gardens. Hapuku Lodge also offers an extensive all New Zealand wine list, local beer and non-alcoholic beverages.

When it comes to activities, Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses is an exceptional base camp for enjoying some of the best things the area has to offer. Discover whale wathing, giant albatross encounters, playful dolphin and seal swimming, sea kayaking or deep-sea fishing. For those staying off the high seas, options include Night Sky Tours, Maori Cultural Tours, scenic flights, horseback riding, biking, the Baby Seal Colony, wine regions.

Location

The retreat is located only about 10 minutes drive from Kaikoura, highly populated by fishermen, farmers and artisans, who have turned the town into an eco-tourism place. 

The small Kaikoura airport is only 15 min. drive away while the larger international Christchurch Airport, which is to the south of Hapuku Lodge, is more than two hours drive.  Blenheim Airport, to the north, is less than two hours drive.

Hapuku Farm - activities

Tony Wilson, the owner of Hapuku lodge, started Hapuku Farm in the beginning of 90s, when visited his nephew Paul, who had acquired a modest deer farm overlooking his favourite surf spot at Mangamanu Bay. Not long after that, the two relatives agreed to become partners in Hapuku Deer Farm.

The farm was small in the beginning, but later the partners acquired more land to sustain the growing deer herd and purchased the 120 acres of the lower farm, where the Lodge and Tree Houses are today.

- Whale watching, giant albatross encounters, playful dolphin and seal swimming, sea kayaking, and deep-sea fishing are available year round.

At the heart of the Hapuku Lodge experience is a passion for good food and wine. Produce is sourced from the Lodge's own herb and vegetable gardens, free range chickens, as well as local market gardens, fisherman and hunters. Wild game is a regular feature on the menu along with crayfish (rock lobster) and other locally sourced seafood.

The Lodge Room

The Lodge Room, overlooking the deer paddock and the mountains, offers a spacious bathroom with a deep Japanese soaking tub, and Hapuku Lodge’s custom furnishings -- including a custom-built king-size bed that can be split into twin beds.

Lodge Suites

The lodge offers two spacious suites that are 80sq metres. They feauture a separate living and sleeping areas, deep Japanese soaking tubs (with room for two!), rain fountain showers, fireplaces, and either a balcony (upstairs) or patio (downstairs) overlooking the deer paddock and Kaikoura’s breathtaking environment. These Lodge Suites can accommodate up to three persons.

The Lodge Suite amenities include:

- Balcony (first floor) or patio (ground floor) terrace with views of Kaikoura’s spectacular mountains

Family Tree House

These tree houses are idal for families traveling with children. The two stories of the Family Tree House consist of an Upper Branch bedroom above and a Lower Branch bedroom below, joined by an enclosed stairway.

The Upper Branch bedroom offers:

- Hapuku Lodge’s custom made extra large king bed (can be converted into two twin beds)
