Holland is a diverse country filled with picturesque watermills, fields of springtime tulips, curved canals, gabled architecture and endless museums.
The capital, Amsterdam, is renowned for its canals, culture and relaxed atmosphere. Visit the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and cycle along its peaceful canals, which are a designated World Heritage Site. South of Amsterdam is Rotterdam, which is home to the best clubs and modern architecture. While Delft and Haarlem are smaller, charisma filled cities. The Hague is famous for being the government centre and home to the queen. From there go to the sand dunes at the beach resort Scheveningen.
The peak of the tourist season in Holland is during July and August when the weather is at its best. In general the climate is moderate with mild summers and cool winters. The rain can come at any time of year, so be prepared. During the off-season months, the crowds are much less crowded and some of the best events are going on, including the Tulip Season, which takes place from mid-March to the end of May. Once the tulips have bloomed they turn Holland’s fields into beautiful, colourful patchwork.
