Summary

Located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head peninsula on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia’s West Papua province, Raja Ampat is an archipelago comprising more than 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. These islands are incredibly remote and almost undisturbed by humans. They are best known for their amazing diversity of marine life with perhaps the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world. They are renowned for excellent diving, snorkelling, kayaking, bird watching and stunning views.

This trip is available from November to March.

ABOUT THE BOAT: Tiger Blue

Tiger Blue is a traditional 34m timber phinisi yacht, which sails around the stunning islands of Eastern Indonesia. The boat has five en-suite cabins, sleeping up to 12 adults, leaving you with plenty of room to relax and take in the incredible scenery. She can be chartered privately or on an individual cabin basis with three core itineraries throughout the year. No day is typical on Tiger Blue, except for the hours of relaxation. You choose the pace and the activities while the Tiger Blue team look after the rest. After breakfast around the large dining table, you can go snorkelling or diving, or venture out on the tender to explore small islands or search for the local wildlife. After lunch, waterski, wakeboard, fish, dive, snorkel, hike or relax in the sun on a lounger on the top deck or lie back with a book in the shade down below. At night, you can sip cocktails at sunset, enjoy bonfires on the beach, or stargaze under the clear night sky.

Itinerary

Day 1
Excursion starts:

Flight to Sorong. Tiger Blue will be moored 30-60 minutes from the airport, making your transfer by car and tender a relatively short journey. Settle in and enjoy your first meal on board. Overnight sail to Penemu.

Day 2
Excursion starts:

Following a gourmet breakfast, head off snorkelling or diving before a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, take your pick between wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking or relaxing on board. Then take the tender to visit a secret bay and embark on a short trek on foot which ends in a blaze of colour at sunset. Overnight sail to Wayag.

Day 3
Excursion starts:

Climb the peaks of Wayag to survey the limestone outcrops from above - an iconic vista full of lush greens and turquoises. After lunch, choose between snorkelling, diving or any other watersports before a cocktail party on the beach beside a roaring bonfire, watching hundreds of stars appear in the night sky.

Day 4
Excursion starts:

Set sail early in the morning to Kawe. Cross the equator underwater while you snorkel or dive surrounded by huge manta rays. After lunch, sail to Aljui Bay, home to the best night-diving in Raja Ampat. Enjoy a relaxed dinner on board.

Day 5
Excursion starts:

Learn how cultured pearls are made at the Atlas pearl farm in the morning. After lunch, explore the bay with a boat tour taking in limestone cliffs, rocks, pinnacles, dolphins and exotic birds. Snorkelling, diving and watersports may fill the rest of your afternoon, before cocktails and a BBQ on a peaceful beach. Overnight sail to Pulau Pef.

Day 6
Excursion starts:

Pulau Pef’s small inlets, bays and crystal-clear lagoons make the ideal setting for kayaking. Surrounded by giant ancient trees, paddle right up to the mangrove roots reaching into the water. Marvel at pre-historic hand paintings on the limestone cliffs. Snorkel or dive any range of habitats from caverns and overhangs to hard and soft corals, keeping an eye out for pygmy seahorses and the endemic walking shark. After lunch, sail to Yang Efo to dive or snorkel with turtles, stingrays and schools of snapper and fusilier fish before sailing to Yen Beser overnight.

Day 7
Excursion starts:

Before dawn breaks, set off on a trek in search of the rare red birds of paradise, which perform an elaborate courtship display as the sun rises. Puffing up their feathers, vibrating and buzzing, the birds also tip upside down to show off their long tail feathers, which form a heart around them. Then move on to explore the jungle, observing endemic trees and rich fauna. Dive at Meoscon, pause for lunch then relax on a short sail before snorkelling again with manta rays. Overnight sail to Sorong.

Day 8
Excursion starts:

After breakfast, pack and prepare to disembark, returning to Sorong airport by tender and car. Flight back home.
