The Restaurant, located above the main pool overlooking the ocean, is open for dinner. The menu features a mix of Western and Indonesian cuisine. Adjacent to the Restaurant is Amankila’s Bar, also with views of the sea. The Terrace, set just back from the signature three-tiered pool is open for breakfast and lunch, and serves Asian and Western cuisine. Afternoon tea is served daily in front of the Library, where local women dressed in sarongs and kebayas offer complimentary Indonesian ginger tea, Bali kopi (coffee) and local Balinese cakes. The Beach Club offers a simple menu of salads, pizzas, Indonesian and Western light dishes for brunch, lunch and afternoon tea. Private dining is available in the suites 24 hours a day.

Surfing
Bali is renowned for its spectacular surf breaks and its virtual year-round season of accessible waves. Ideal for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced surfers, surfing sessions will be led by the resort's team of accomplished Balinese surf guides headed by the legendary Oka Sulaksana. A professional sailor, surfer and windsurfer who won two gold medals at the Asian Games, Pak Oka has represented Indonesia four times at the Summer Olympics and is the undefeated Windsurfing Champion of Indonesia. All the guides are multilingual (including Japanese) and are experts at reading conditions and finding the best breaks.

Scuba diving
The waters off East Bali boast some of the most beautiful scuba diving sites in Indonesia – with options suited to all levels of experience. The turquoise depths teem with a kaleidoscope of brilliantly coloured fish and corals, and scuba divers from all over Bali descend on these shores to explore the diverse marine life. Dive around magnificent rock pinnacles to catch a glimpse of giant tuna, manta rays and mola mola (oceanic sunfish). Swim through coral gardens to see playful clownfish hiding in sea anemones as well as moray eels, turtles, schooling barracuda and walls covered with hundreds of feather stars. Amankila’s Guest Assistants offer information on all dive sites in the area and can easily make bookings for PADI-certified courses for those wanting to learn to dive or to upgrade their qualifications.

DINING EXPERIENCES

Private dinner on the beach
Amankila’s secluded beach is the perfect setting for a romantic dining experience. The entire Amankila Beach Club, Pool and Beach are reserved for one couple to enjoy in complete privacy.  A table for two with candles and flowers is set on the beach and a private chef and waiter will tend to the guests' every need.  A bale is set up close by and a bonfire is lit which brightens up the evening sky - perfect for relaxation après dinner.

Candles light the pathway down to a private bale set around Amankila’s three-tiered pool. This provides for a serene setting, with gentle ocean breeze passing through and the sound of waves breaking in the distance. A chef will prepare a personalised set menu using a selection of either Western or Indonesian delights.

Satay evening
The experience begins with a beautiful drive through the countryside in the late afternoon.  The first stop is Bale Tirta Sari where guests can enjoy the spectacular view of the rice fields and Amuk Bay. Afterwhich, guests arrive to a candle-lit pathway that leads across a peanut plantation and into a private bale where a personal chef and waiter will attend to them for the evening. The chef will prepare a delicious authentic Balinese satay feast including Balinese urab, a variety of sate, ikan pepes and finally, dessert to be enjoyed while the sun sets.

Evening canapés & daiquiris
Watch the Balinese sky's dramatic and colourful transformation as the sun goes down over the island whilst sipping daiquiris and nibbling on canapés. Amankila’s candle-lit bale is set high on the hills, which is the perfect place to enjoy pre-dinner drinks.  The recommended departure time from Amankila is 5.30pm and advance booking is recommended.

Rijsttafel dinner
The Rijsttafel dinner is highly recommended for guests who want to experience a wide variety of Indonesian dishes in one meal. Served either in the privacy of a suite, the restaurant or on a secluded table around Amankila’s three-tiered pool, the Rijsttafel offers a selection of 10 different dishes from Indonesia.  Choose from a vegetarian, seafood only or a selection of vegetarian, seafood and meat rijsttafel. The meal is accompanied with rice and concluded with a trio of sorbéts. Traditional Balinese dress can also be provided for a complete and authentic experience.

Megibung - a traditional balinese feast
Within the region of East Bali there is a tradition called “Megibung”. This translates to “sharing a meal from one platter”.  It is shared at festive and ceremonial occasions, often with “nasi tumpeng”. Nasi tumpeng is a cone of rice representing Gunung Agung (Mt Agung), where the Hindu Mother Temple of Besakih is located. Surrounding the cone of rice is a variety of Balinese dishes, which celebrates the quality and abundance of food that the island provides.  Special preparation is required, therefore advance bookings are necessary and can be taken by Amankila's Guest Assistants one day in advance. The delicious feast may be enjoyed in the restaurant, privacy of a guest suite or a private table can be set alongside the three-tiered pool.  Traditional Balinese dress can also be provided for a complete and authentic experience.

CULTURAL TOURS

Royal Palaces
In old Bali, you will find the royal palaces of Klungkung and Karangasem. This is also where the last Raja of Karangasem built his water palaces: Tirtagangga, now a public bathing area; and Ujung, which conveys the extravagant sweep of the Raja’s kingly ambition. To reach Ujung, you must first journey to Amlapura, the capital of Bali’s Karangasem Regency. From here, the palace is only a few minutes along a country road that winds between picturesque rice terraces. From the roadside, one’s first glimpse is of a grand Romanesque hall, decorated with ornate archways. Their distinctive shape, more baroque than Balinese, finds fresh resonance today in the doorways and alcoves of Amankila. The land then drops in steep, terraced fashion to a sun-washed valley claimed by two royal bathing pools and just beyond, the brilliant blue sea.

Villages
East Bali is full of villages showcasing a way of life little changed over the centuries. None is more rooted in the past however, than the religious community of Tenganan. While most of Bali embraced and reinterpreted Hinduism over the centuries, Tenganan still believes in its own divine origin. In this tiny society, clothing has always been central to religious ritual and today, families still painstakingly fashion geringsing or double ikat cloth. It is only in Tenganan and Gujarat, India, that this rare textile is still produced, the warp and weft threads dyed before the fabric is woven.

Temples
Two of the island’s most important temples – Luhur Lempuyang and Besakih, the island’s mother temple – are also located in East Bali. Luhur Lempuyang is one of Bali’s sad kahyangan (six temples of the heavens), the six most venerated temples on an island rife with places of prayer and offering. Besakih is located high on the southwestern flanks of Mount Agung, Bali’s sacred mountain which rises majestically behind Amankila. The mountain itself can be climbed in a morning, the route dotted with shrines, temples and stone steps strewn with the handmade coconut-leaf wrappings used for fruit and flower offerings.

The Beach Club is located at the base of the cliff, a five minutes’ walk below the main resort. Guests can either walk to the beach or be driven there in one of Amankila's open-air buggies. Set within a grove of coconut palms and partially shaded by a frangipani tree, is Amankila’s largest swimming pool. Windsurfers, boogie boards, kayaks and Hobie cats are available at the Beach Club. Amankila's staff will assist guests with water sports and provide lessons or sailing partners if required. Eight private lounging bales are set along the sandy beach, tucked into the foliage for added privacy. Drinks and light meals can be enjoyed in the bales.
