Amankila or 'peaceful hill' is an oasis of calm in the remote yet accessible regency of Karangasem, Bali’s most traditional regency. The area offers a host of activities from mountain biking and diving, to cultural excursions to temples and ancient water palaces.
The approach to Amankila builds a sense of anticipation as the long drive winds up, then down to the airy lobby. Surrounded by frangipani trees, the lobby affords exceptional ocean views, as well as views of the resort’s signature three-tiered pool. Down below the resort, set back from the private beach in a coconut grove, is the Beach Club which offers another pool, as well as casual dining. The 34 stilted free-standing suites are tucked into the lush vegetation around the resort, and all boast outstanding sea views.
The resort is close to Manggis, Candi Dasa, Tenganan and other villages where traditional crafts are still practiced, and outings to explore the region’s natural beauty are well worth the effort.
Bali is located in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago. Its north coast faces the Bali Sea, while its southern coast is lapped by the Indian Ocean. The island is just two kilometres off the eastern tip of Java.
Bali is one of the most accessible destinations in Southeast Asia, with daily flights from most major cities in Asia and Australia. Travellers from the United States or Europe tend to fly via Singapore or Hong Kong. There are also domestic flights and ferry connections from the surrounding Indonesian islands.
From the international airport in Denpasar, Amankila is a 1 hour drive away.
The Restaurant, located above the main pool overlooking the ocean, is open for dinner. The menu features a mix of Western and Indonesian cuisine. Adjacent to the Restaurant is Amankila’s Bar, also with views of the sea. The Terrace, set just back from the signature three-tiered pool is open for breakfast and lunch, and serves Asian and Western cuisine. Afternoon tea is served daily in front of the Library, where local women dressed in sarongs and kebayas offer complimentary Indonesian ginger tea, Bali kopi (coffee) and local Balinese c...
Traditional Balinese massage and beauty treatments are available in the privacy of guests' suites, in the specially-designated massage pavilion, or at the Beach Club where two teakwood massage tables are hidden away in a grove of coconut palms and flowering bushes.
Yoga classes can be taken under the coconut trees surrounding the Beach Club, or in the privacy of guests’ suites.
Aside from the 41m Beach Club pool, Amankila’s signature three-tiered pool sits dramatically just below the lobby. Set into the cliff-edge, the three blue-tiled pools face the sea and flow one into the other down a stepped gradient similar to terraced rice paddies.
For cruising and snorkeling, Amankila offers two outriggers designed after the jukung, a traditional Balinese fishing craft. Aman XII, a 50-foot vessel with a large sundeck and shaded area, is used for daily morning and afternoon cruises. Aman XVI is a 40-foot vessel with sundeck and shaded area used mainly for private sunrise or lunch cruises across to Nusa Penida. Snorkeling equipment is available onboard both boats.
