Among the most colourful are La Fiesta de los Locos in June, when bands play and locals parade in beautiful or outrageous costumes; Mexican Independence Day on September 16, when bells ring out and fireworks fill the sky, and November’s Day of the Dead, a four-day celebration that sees elaborate skull- and skeleton-themed decorations, parades and parties bring the city – conversely – alive.
