CASA VICENS
The first important commission for modernisme master Antoni Gaudí was a summer house for the Vicens family completed between 1883 and 1885 in an area of the city that was open fields at that time.
With Oriental influences and a polychromatic mixture of ceramic tiles, rubble stone and brickwork the external façade of the house is joyous celebration of ornament and detail. A series of beautifully restored public and private rooms provide a distinct and moving impression of the Vicens family and their domestic life.
The house was extended in the early 20th C and is only open to the public since November last year with the original Gaudí building providing the basis for the museological restoration.

SALA RAZZMATAZZ
For clubbers and lovers of live music this is the Barcelona venue, a multi-space club that has been at the vanguard of the music scene not only in the city but in Spain.
Located within a warehouse in the semi-industrial neighbourhood of Poblenou there are five separate spaces all of which have their own individual programme of performances and events. Founded in 2,000 over the years it has become an obligatory venue for touring international artists such as David Byrne, Kanye West, Coldplay, Artic Monkeys etc. all of whom have played here as well as a launching pad for emerging Spanish talent. A good place to investigate the local indie-music scene.

COMPLEX EQUIPAMENTS A VIL.LA URÀNIA
This complex of buildings located between Barcelona’s Via Agusta and C/ Saragossa in the Sarrià – Sant Gervasi neighbourhood is a community centre for neighbouring residents. Designed by SUMO Arquitectes and Yolanda Olmo as an NZEB (nearly zero energy building) the building uses simple and more advanced technology to lower energy consumption such as roof solar panels and a gallery circulation system that can be more or less open depending on the weather conditions. This project includes the refurbishment of the existing 19th C villa and gardens on the site, the former home of scientist Josep Comas i Solà who discovered 945 Barcelona, a minor planet or asteroid orbiting the sun named after his native city.



SHOPPING

SANTA EULALIA
The only privately owned luxury multi-brand store remaining on Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s premier shopping street, is a must-see for fashion lovers. This iconic institution offers leading labels in both women’s and men’s wear, as well as a tailoring service where Juan Carlos I (former Spanish monarch) has his suits and shirts made. Founded in 1843 the interior design by William Sofield includes 2,000 sq.m. over three floors where contemporary and period details define Santa Eulalia’s unique style including artworks and graphics illustrating the changing local fashions of the last almost two centuries. There is also a first floor café with its own terrace for a break between purchases.

BALLUT
A design shop located within the Eixample neighbourhood dedicated to promoting local Barcelona creative talents. Textiles, decorative objects, crafts and accessories all with an individual story behind each piece that reflect the city’s long design traditions. The shop interior is organised within a classic residential apartment where the former details such as the alcoves and mouldings are used to great effect. Ballut represents a sustainable approach to shopping where investment in design is considered over the long term. The assistants at Ballut will be happy to explain each of the items on display here and give detailed information about the local design culture.

ANDRES SARDA
Andres Sarda is a lingerie label that was founded in Barcelona in 2003 renowned for its luxurious textiles and craftsmanship. The designs are inspired by the Mediterranean and the sensuality of the feminine form and personality. With several collections created every year, available at the Barcelona shop, the catwalk shows are much anticipated on the Spanish fashion scene. The Sarda family’s involvement with the textile industry stretches back to the 19th Century when they produced high quality lace mantillas which over the years were worn by national and international celebrities like the Duchess of Alba and Jackie Kennedy. Nowadays the lingerie is defined by its seductive but wearable approach to design.

CORTANA
A collection of women’s wear, prêt-a-porter, haut couture and bridal wear. All designed and made in Barcelona ateliers.  Rosa Esteva, originally form Majorca is the driving force and designer behind the brand which is sold at the Cortana shop within a beautifully designed space that has twice been awarded as best shop window by the Barcelona Tourism board. The collections are a product of the Mediterranean appreciation of art, architecture and design in terms of the construction and conception of the clothing. Esteva is a water-colourist and her designs have the floaty and delicate feel of a work of art produced by expert hands.

LA COMERCIAL
Located in what is probably one of Barcelona’s most charming neighbourhoods (just a few minutes walk from the hotel) . La Comercial is a network of 6 shops all situated on either side of a pedestrian street around the corner from the Espai Born within the eponymous Born area. Women’s wear, men’s wear, shoes and accessories as well as lifestyle. The selection of labels and range of products together with a very personal service makes this collection of concept-stores founded originally in 2001 a must-visit for anyone looking to find a souvenir or article of clothing to remind them of their visit to Barcelona.
