Summary

Launched in 1971, the original lodge eschewed hunting in favour of photographic safaris. It was set up by Harry Selby, a safari specialist who inspired one of Ernest Hemingway’s fictional heroes. Selby chose a beautiful spot under giant sycamore figs and leadwood trees on the northern bank of the Khwai River. He also built his "bridge over the River Khwai", which today serves as the North Gate entrance to Moremi Game Reserve.

Moremi is exceptional for year-round game viewing. No fences are allowed in the reserve, so animals roam freely according to seasonal migration patterns. Come here on a wealth of adventures ranging from early morning game drives to moonlight safaris and stargazing excursions. Just six passengers travel in eachvehicle, so everyone enjoys great views of the action.

Back at the Khwai River Lodge, A Belmond Safari, round off a perfect day with a dip in the pool or a spa treatment, then join for a buffet of delectable African specialities in Mothupi’s Boma as a choir sings tribal songs.

Location

Belmond's three luxurious safari lodges are set in the unspoilt wilderness of Northern Botswana. Each lodge enjoys its own ecosystem, so the experience from one to the next is dramatically different. Together they form an incredible safari journey that will enchant the most seasoned traveller.

Elephants are, not surprisingly, the main attraction at Savute Elephant Lodge, a Belmond Safari, located in the Chobe National Park, (approx 20 minutes flight from Khwai River Lodge) with an exemplary eco-friendly design, luxurious spa and viewing hide.

At Eagle Island Lodge, a Belmond Safari (approx 20 minute flight from Khwai River Lodge), stunningly designed to conjure up an explorer’s base, you can drift through the watery landscape on a mokoro canoe, spotting colourful reed frogs and kingfishers.

You can fly from Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport (JNB) to either Maun (MUB) or Kasane (BBK); from Cape Town Airport (CPT) to Maun; from Zambia or Zimbabwe by road transfer or scheduled charter flight; From Namibia by commercial flight or Private Charter. Private charter flights from / to the lodges and from / to Maun or Kasane airports can be arranged.

Scheduled intercamp flights are approximately 30 minutes from Maun Airport or 60 minutes from Kasane Airport. Helicopter transfers from Maun are are also available.

All guests are welcome at Belmond's private airstrip and a helipad is also located nearby.
