Shakespeare Garden Soirée
Is the backdrop for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, actually Connecticut, and not Long Island? There’s certainly a case for it. A social scene, dance to the sounds of live music, and sip bespoke drinks inspired by the great authors that incorporate herbs from the organic garden and locally distilled liquor and dance the night away in style under Art Deco-inspired lights. Guests are welcome to dress in 1920s-style attire to complete the scene.

Cycle through the bucolic Litchfield Hills
For over 15 years, the Tour of the Litchfield Hills offers non-competitive 12, 30, 55, 75 and 100 mile bike rides each August. Cycle with the pack or break out on your own. Ride a single-track trail that winds through the nearly 1,000-acre Steep Rock Preserve, a scenic 8-mile loop around the banks of Lake Waramaug, or the 40 miles of trails in the White Memorial Conservation Center.

Enjoy a day in the countryside
A mere 10 minute drive from Mayflower Inn and Spa takes you to two state parks, Mount Tom State Park and Lake Waramaug, both of which offer spectacular trails and breathtaking views. (highly recommended is the beautiful Steep Rock Preserve for a hike.) Set off to the picturesque town of Kent, to visit its many art galleries and charming outdoor cafés, followed by a trip to West Cornwall’s covered bridge, one of the last in the state and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the Tapping Reeve Law School Museum in Litchfield, travel back in time to the 19th century with a mesmerizing interactive exhibit. End your day of discovery learning how to milk cows and make cheese with an artisan cheesemaking class at Thorncrest Farm in Goshen.

Enjoy a day in the seaside
At 1,756 acres, the Devil’s Den Preserve is the Nature Conservancy’s largest preserve in Connecticut. Wind through trails past dramatic rocky crests, outcroppings, and cliffs forming high ledges, and look out for protected animal species including red foxes, bobcats, coyotes and wood ducks. Then head to Short Beach Park for fresh seaside air, a family game of miniature golf or tennis match. Enjoy a picnic on the sand before driving to Norwalk’s Maritime Aquarium, where you’ll be able to gently stroke several species of sharks and rays. At Match restaurant, near the aquarium, choose from a “New School Raw Bar” featuring poached, smoked, and fried takes on traditional raw platters, before heading back to Mayflower Inn & Spa.

Enjoy a private guided hike
Go on a private guided hike with a local naturalist to learn all about our local flora and fauna. The hike will wind through meadows, farmland, wooded ridge and wetlands before reaching the Macricostas Pinnacle, one of the finest overlooks in the state. Enjoy a delicious picnic while taking in breathtaking views of Lake Waramaug and the surrounding hills and mountains.

Take leisurely morning laps in our heated outdoor pool and restorative evening dips in the indoor Spa House pool. Surrounded by towering pine and oak trees, our heated 48-foot-long outdoor pool is kept at a comfortable 86 degrees. Lined by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lush gardens that include Gold Threadleaf Cypress, Japanese Threadleaf Maple and Tri-color Beech trees, the 33-foot-long Spa House pool is also kept at a cozy 86 degrees. Instead of chlorine, the indoor pool uses bromine, which is gentler on skin and hair.

Ski Mohawk Mountain
In the late ‘40s, Walt Schoenknecht created what’s widely considered the earliest snow-making system in the U.S.—an invention that paved the way for decades of first-rate skiing at the Mohawk Mountain Ski Area, located less than 20 miles from Mayflower Inn and Spa. Ski its 25 trails spread out over 107 acres of skiable terrain, with an elevation summit of 1,600 feet. For those who prefer cross-country skiing, the Concierge has skis for guests to enjoy on trails right on the property.

Step back in time with a scenic drive in a classic automobile
Enjoy a chauffeured morning drive in a classic 1936 Buick while taking in vintage New England at its finest, rolling past towered white churches, hundred-year-old barns, grand Early American houses, quaint village greens, and serene lakes ringed by wooded hills. Your driver will then take you to a picturesque spot in the scenic Connecticut countryside to enjoy a custom gourmet picnic prepared by the chefs.

Take in a film at an old-time movie theater
Set in a converted red barn dating back to 1927, the Bantam Cinema first showed silent movies accompanied by a Wurlitzer organ. These days, the decades-old 35mm film projectors have been replaced with a state-of-the-art digital system, and a meet-the-filmmaker program that has seen notables such as Daniel Day-Lewis stopping by. But some things still remain the same, from the rustic barn setting to the popcorn topped with real butter.
