In the Sacred Valley of the Incas, among verdant fields and towering mountains, lies Rio Sagrado, a Belmond Hotel. Set on the banks of the rushing Urubamba River, this luxury hotel is built in natural materials to resemble an authentic Andean village. Situated at a lower altitude than nearby Cusco, the hotel provides the perfect environment in which to acclimatise. It's also an ideal base to explore the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
A stay at Rio Sagrado, a Belmond Hotel, is an adventure for the senses. Garlanded by flowers, the hotel's incredible gardens are threaded with streams and waterfalls. Marvel at the sight of fluttering hummingbirds. Float in the heated pool or sink into a hammock. As birds sing overhead and wind whispers in the trees, you’ll find total tranquility.
Whether feeding baby alpacas or being rocked to sleep by the gentle breeze, it’s the little things that are guaranteed make your stay special.
All the rooms have river views and radiate authentic Andean charm with bright fabrics and alpaca wools. As evening falls, savour some of the region’s best-kept culinary secrets in the elegant El Huerto restaurant before enjoying a zingy pisco sour in El Huerto Bar.
Accessed by a hairpinned road that stretches 20 km from Cusco, this Andean countryside is a patchwork of ancient ruins, colonial towns and secluded weaving villages. At once scenic and historical, this peaceful slice of the Andes has become a destination in its own right in recent years – and it’s easy to see why.
The natural beauty here is enchanting. Against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks this fertile valley winds below steep forests and ancient agricultural terraces. Llamas and alpacas roam freely among the fertile ground that lines the banks of the rushing Urubamba River. Birds twitter overhead and the wind whispers through trees.
Archaeological sites are abundant, too. Try to solve the mystery of the stone terraces at Ollantaytambo before marvelling at the chequerboard salt pans of Maras. Pay homage to an estimated 3,000 Inca people, who are believed to have been buried in the steep, creviced mountainside of Pisac. Here, markets are famed for their stunning crafts. At Chinchero, local people showcase textiles made with techniques passed down through generations.
