Summary

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5.

Stretching 25,000 hectares over a malaria free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.

Shamwari is a place where guests can exist in harmony with nature, however fleeting the moment, where wildlife freely roam the landscape under the relentless African sun. Shamwari incorporates five lodges, one villa and one explorer camp; each one unique with its own essence. Kids

Upon arrival, the fabulous children’s coordinator (Riverdene Lodge) or lodge manager (Sarili Lodge) will discuss activity options with the family taking the family’s size, children’s ages and the weather into consideration. Child minding facilities are available at an additional cost for children younger than 4 years as they are too young to join game drives.

Each child will receive an age-appropriate gift pack.

Activities

Game Drives

Interactive game drives, lasting up to 3 hours, take place in the tranquil moods of sunrise and sunset. You are guided by your game ranger in an open game viewing vehicle and you are asked to share any particular interests with your ranger who will try to incorporate these into your game drive. On game drives guests will enjoy a sundowner drink at sunset and coffee/tea at sunrise. No persons under the age of 4 years are permitted to join game drives.

Villa Lobengula

Villa Lobengula is a beautiful and tranquil space tucked away in the depths of the valley bushveld. It is a place where your soul can rejuvenate and rest in supreme peace and comfort whilst the vibration of authentic Africa dances through your being.

The Villa mirrors a traditional African “kraal” which is enclosed by breath-taking views. The sanctuary encompasses a range of holistic therapies to enchant and stimulate the senses. Wildlife activities vary from guided game drives, guided game walks, camping under the stars, picnics, sundowners with scenic views and informal wildlife presentations.

You will be provided with home grown fresh and organic produce. The mission here is to support the local communities and farmers to ensure sustainable development between Lobengula and the community arises.

The Villa has focused on utilising suppliers and guest amenities who uphold green initiatives and who practice responsible and conscious living. The Villa also supports community development programs where possible. Certain decor items in the Villa have been locally made by ladies from the nearby village and going forward to initiate projects whereby these folk can be incorporated.

The sanctuary at the Villa encompasses aspects of Zen. Traditional spa treatments have been spared and authentic Thai massage and reflexology take preference. Yoga therapy is also an option.

Shamwari Explorer Camp

This unique walking experience is ideal for guests looking for an adventurous and authentic option offering the ambience of a tented bush camp of old Safari lore. The camp is located on a plateau set amongst the only basalt and granite extrusions on Shamwari. A truly magical setting awaits!

This is a flexible experience for guests to explore Shamwari Game Reserve as that the rigidity of travel needs to be simplified by going back to basics. This explorer camp reflects the original safari of being on foot and sleeping around the fire at night within the comfort of a bush tent.

Guests will enjoy walks through the magnificent Shamwari Game Reserve, whereby their guide will enhance their experience with birding, cultural history and other natural history of the area, along with ample opportunity of some Big 5 encounters.

General Information
- The Explorer Camp operates every Friday and Saturday night throughout the year. Sunday night can be added onto the two night stay at the standard rates
- Each trail is 2 nights with a set departure each Friday of the week (Sunday night can be added as an optional 3rd night on request)
- The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide
- Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours
- A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve
- No persons younger than 16 years or older than 60 years will be able to participate.

Camp Site
The camp site is unfenced to provide the true explorer ambience and tents are placed in fairly close proximity without encroaching on another tents privacy. Wild animals are able to cross through the camp at any time and although all safety precautions have been followed in setting up the camp; this remains a reality.

Tents: 3 x Mobile canvas (camping) tents sleeping a maximum of 2 people each

Meals: All meals are prepared and enjoyed under the stars • Ablutions: 1 x Outside shower shared by all guests (water is heated via gas) 1 x Flush toilet shared by all guests

- 1 x LED light for night time use
- 1 x Outside hand basin (warm water is supplied on request or at first light in the morning)
