WELLBEING FACILITIES

The free-flowing design of Teranka means endless spaces for practicing wellbeing, beneath the olive trees at dawn to among the sand dunes at dusk to on their open-air yoga deck beneath the stars.

Guests are encouraged to find their flow through hiking, yoga, breathwork, meditation, stretching, stargazing or simply idling the day away. Allowing the body to simply reset is the greatest gift we can give. The hotel's two treatment rooms, open air gym, outdoor fitness deck, guided hiking routes and swimming pool offer unlimited ways in which to strengthen, support and unwind the mind and the body. The sea, with its dual activating and calming qualities, is just steps from the hotel grounds.

Teranka has aligned with the wellbeing world’s most extraordinary practitioners to create a selection of rituals that honour the body, mind and spirit. Their therapies and rituals combine classics such as relaxing and deep tissue massage with advanced bodywork modalities such as kanso shirochampi, an ancient Ayurvedic therapy focused on the feet and head that activates marma pressure points. Teranka’s dedicated treatment rooms lie alongside their free-flowing pool area and it is here that guests can retreat to disconnect with the outer world and reconnect with the slow and subtle rhythms of the island.

From visiting practitioners to live music, stargazing with the Formentera Astronomical Society or taking a botanical tour through the undiscovered sides of the island, there’s always something happening at Teranka. 


ART
Art is central to all they do at Teranka and allows them to create a link between their natural world and their curated one. Their extraordinary, ever-changing art collection has been developed by interior designer and collector Katrina Phillips, of the iconic 99 Portobello store and gallery, whose rigorous dedication to beauty and authenticity has resulted in a series of works that reflect Teranka’s values, vision and versatility.

Largely female-led, the work of their artists respects the maternal lineage of Formentera and harnesses the island’s intuitive, protective energy. Teranka’s artworks use natural and found materials along with local artisanal techniques such as weaving and ceramics to creates deep links between the island’s physical heritage – fishing, farming, foraging – and its esoteric one – the punks, poets and pirates who’ve washed up on Formentera’s shores. Their evolving art collection is complemented by a thoughtfully curated hotel library which aims to connect guests through ideas, inspiration and beautiful conversations.


MUSIC
The soundtrack to the Teranka experience is a powerfully evocative part of the journey, a deep dive into the free-spirited nature of Formentera and a love letter to the creative minds – both real and imagined – who have called this magical island 'home'. Compiled by musical curator Emma Shenkman, Teranka’s sound is an eclectic, inspirational and essentially universal language that blurs boundaries, crosses cultures and creates a deeply rooted sense of place.

From rare Serge Gainsbourg reggae cuts to Prince’s eighties synth sounds to the organic tones of afro jazz at sunset, each piece of music and each vocal has been chosen to elicit the emotions of Formentera and Teranka – freedom, inclusivity, love and light – allowing listeners to melt into a new mode of living.


SHOPPING
Teranka’s concisely edited boutique has also been created with the idea of casting a mermaid’s net over the island to gather the pieces, the labels, the one-offs that define Formentera’s story. Here you’ll find dresses in natural fabrics, antique objets that reflect the island’s long history of occupation by the Romans and a refined edit of thoughtful items whose creators have a deep and authentic resonance to the island.


LIBRARY
Comfortably dressing Teranka’s lobby walls is the library. Interior designer and curator, Katrina Phillips, draws from magical and mythical underwater creatures to stimulate the imagination; the surrounding flora and fauna for a greater appreciation of the island’s natural bounty; and classic maritime titles (think Moby Dick) to entertain long afternoons on the sand. A thoughtful selection for both young and younger to help spark connection and conversation during mealtime or at the pool, books are on loan during your stay.


BEACHES
By day, all roads lead to the beaches, of which Formentera has an abundance. Teranka lies on Playa Mitjorn, the mythical southern stretch that is home to gin-clear waters, ice-white sands and a winding boardwalk that links the island’s iconic chiringuitos. Playa Illetes is where visiting yachts from Ibiza spend their days at anchor and is home to excellent seafood restaurants such as Juan y Andrea and Es Molí de Sal. A regular passenger boat takes guests from Illetes to the nearby uninhabited nature reserve of Es Palmador. Cala Saona is a deep cove surrounded by red cliffs and pine forests that is especially popular at sunset.


SPORTS
Cycling and e-biking are an exceptional way to explore using the island-wide network of 32 rutas verdes (green routes) 29 of which are suitable for cycling. The 100 kilometres of routes mean that visitors can get to know the entire island –  including the iconic salt pans and magical caminos – with minimal environmental impact. Hiking the vertiginous, stone flagged Camí de Sa Pujada – an ancient Roman Road – provides a remarkable way to view the island from its highest point.

Horse riding is especially beautiful on the beaches at sunset. Padel can be played at several courts on the island, while water activities, including foiling, kayaking and snorkelling can be found everywhere. Formentera’s most respected scuba diving centre, VellMarí, was founded by the National Geographic underwater explorer Manu San Félix in 1993 and is dedicated to the conservation of Formentera’s UNESCO-protected marine environment.


HERITAGE
Formentera is a geographic anomaly, a curiously shaped island barely connected in the middle, honed by four wild winds and thousands of years of shifting tides. It is home to Roman salt pans and high plateaus, Bronze Age settlements – including the megalithic burial ground at Ca Na Costa – and ancient windmills.

In the late 1960s Formentera became a stop-off on the fabled hippie trail – which retraced age-old links between Marrakech, Goa, Afghanistan and Ibiza –  and the island developed a reputation as a hotbed of freewheeling bohemianism. Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan spent extended periods on Formentera, as would Kate Moss, Jade Jagger and Charlotte Tilbury in the 1990s. To this day, Formentera is defined by a low-slung, lo-fi elementalism that is both barefoot and beautiful.


ACTIVITIES
Formentera has a winemaking industry dating back to the 13th century and has several vineyards – including Terra Moll and Cap de Barbaría – where tours and tastings can be arranged. Sunset at the Cap de Barbaría lighthouse – named for Africa’s nearby Barbary Coast – is an atmospheric end to the day. Charming markets can be found across the island, including the weekly hippie market at La Mola and the nightly craft market in the pretty coastal resort of Es Pujols. Formentera’s charming capital, Sant Francesc, is home to a lively pavement café scene, excellent shopping and fabulous fortified 17th century church.
