HAUS DER KUNST
This vibrant public gallery showcases the best in international contemporary art, staying true to its history of featuring avant-garde works since the mid-20th century. Visit its collection of multimedia exhibits, take a guided tour, and check out a couple of the accompanying talks and performances.

MUNICH RESIDENZ
This huge palace-turned-museum preserves the residence of the Bavarian monarchs who ruled here from the 17th century until 1918. Be sure to visit the spectacular Antiquarium, the oldest room in the palace and the most opulent Renaissance hall north of the Alps.

HOFGARTEN
Once the court garden of the adjacent Munich Residenz, Hofgarten is a popular spot with locals and visitors alike. Stroll down colourful flower-bordered avenues to the pretty 17th century pavilion, then visit the surrounding arcades – each decorated with recently-restored frescos depicting the history of Bavaria.

GÄRTNERPLATZTHEATER
Munich’s stunning state theatre opened its doors in 1864 and, to this day, remains one of the most lively in the country. With an extensive programme of classical and popular opera, musicals, concerts and ballet running from September to July, it is a must-visit on a trip to the city.

DEUTSCHES MUSEUM
Spread over 25,000 sqm of floor space, this is the biggest museum of science and technology in the world. Discover a fascinating collection of technological exhibits on astronomy, cars, musical instruments and more, as well as for interactive workshops and tours.

NYMPHENBURG PALACE
This stunning Baroque palace was once the summer residence of the Bavarian royals, and some sections date as far back as the mid-1600s. Stroll through the classical landscaped gardens before touring the sumptuous rooms and halls. In the summer months, visitors can take a tranquil gondola ride on the park canal.

ENGLISCHER GARTEN
A sprawling green space in the heart of Munich, the Englischer Garten is one of Europe’s largest urban parks. It is the perfect destination for cycling and jogging, summer picnicking, or simply escaping the hum of city life. The park is also home to a few restaurants and Munich’s second biggest beer garden.

VIKTUALIENMARKT MUNICH
This historic food market in the city centre has evolved from a 19th century farmers’ market to a popular destination for gourmands. From Monday to Saturday every week, visitors can browse 140 colourful stalls filled with fresh produce, wine, flowers and delicatessen delights.


ART IN MUNICH

Lenbachhaus
Lenbachhaus is one of the most important art museums in Munich and located just behind The Charles Hotel. It’s a leading space for local and visiting art history enthusiasts. Curators put together insightful exhibitions focusing on key artworks from the 19th century, including pieces from The New Objectivity movement (a style of Expressionism developed in Germany in the 1920s), and works by artists from the acclaimed Der Blauer Reiter group of the 1910s. As well as historical artworks, the museum also showcases contemporary art by international artists to encourage a dynamic dialogue between the past and the present.

Neue Pinakothek
Another institution with an interest in 19th century artworks is Neue Pinakothek (The New Picture Gallery). Open since 1981, the gallery is home to an impressive collection of international masterpieces, not limited to Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, Edgar Degas’ ‘The Woman Ironing’, and Édouard Manet’s ‘Le Déjeuner’. As well as paintings, visitors can find sculptures such as Bertel Thorvaldsen’s ‘Adonis’.

Pinakothek der Moderne
Pinakothek der Moderne (State Gallery of Modern Art) is a striking museum dedicated to art, graphics, design and architecture from the 20th and 21st centuries. While the impressive building will appeal to architecture aficionados, art experts will be particularly impressed by the permanent collections, which include the Modern Art Collection of the Bavarian State Painting Collections. On display are many significant pieces created by world-renowned artists such as Joseph Beuys, Max Beckmann and Andy Warhol. The complex is also home to the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich and Die Neue Sammlung, the oldest design museum in the world.

Museum Brandhorst
Museum Brandhorst is a leading modern art museum on the Munich art scene. It’s home to the famous Brandhorst Collection, a catalogue of works collected since the 1970s by Anette and Udo Brandhorst, featuring more than 1,000 works by pioneering artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection reflects the couple’s interests, which revolves mainly around avant-garde styles, European post-war modernism, pop art and, more recently, art from the United States. As well as displaying permanent collections, the museum hosts a variety of inspiring temporary exhibitions featuring pieces borrowed from, and representing, the modern art movement around the world.

Alte Pinakothek
Another Munich gallery of great importance is Alte Pinakothek (Old Picture Gallery). Bringing a touch of history to the Munich art scene, the beautifully designed institution houses a collection of works from 16thcentury masters such as Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. While some parts of the gallery are under renovation until 2018, many sections remain open to those who wish to take their journey of artistic discovery back in time.

Sophia’s is a cocktail bar with passion. The 8 metre bar and cosy, Moroccan lounge is found next to the Old Botanical Garden, in the centre of Munich, for the people of Munich. Sophia’s Bar menu continues in the botanical theme, with well balanced and imaginative drinks created by Bar Manager Roman Kern. Roman re-invents the classics by mixing natural essences, drying fruit and vegetables, creating powders out of liqueurs, freezing herbs and pickling spices. These can be enjoyed to the sound of a rotating program of well-known DJs and talented musicians.

Sophia’s is a restaurant, a bar and a cosy lounge, next to the Old Botanical Garden in the centre of Munich.
