The Restaurant serves fresh and innovative gourmet cuisine created by the Chef Fine Dining, Heiko Nieder. The secret of his style is his large array of flavours, which go beyond classic expectations of taste. The Restaurant has been awarded 18 GaultMillau points and 2 Michelin stars.

Its menu reflects Heiko Nieder’s enjoyment of experimentation. The Restaurant’s dishes include Breton lobster with strawberries, beetroot, tarragon and mustard as well as rabbit with preserved mushrooms, garden herbs and miso. The desserts likewise offer an element of surprise – they also incorporate vegetables: blueberries with celery, cucumber and ginger.

At lunchtime, you can try the amuse-bouche menu, which offers you the opportunity to try an exciting selection of The Restaurant’s culinary range, or a 4- or 5-course lunch. In the evening, The Restaurant offers 5- to 8-course dinners , a special vegetarian menu as well as the 12-course Tasting Menu.

The Restaurant serves both lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Friday, but is open only for dinner on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday and Monday.

The gourmet restaurant, which seats 47 guests and offers the Private Dining Room, lounge bar and terrace, has a distinct eclectic style. The fully restored, historic ceiling lends the room a stylish ambience, complemented by exclusive interior design.

The Saltz restaurant, designed by artist Rolf Sachs, exudes a unique atmosphere of relaxed familiarity combined with an air of understated opulence. It is a place in which guests can question their preconceptions and see things from a completely new perspective. Chef à la carte Julian Mai has created a menu of uncomplicated sophistication, which is characteristic of the simple yet refined approach he takes to cooking and his belief in using regional ingredients and specialities. Guests in the Saltz Bar can enjoy cocktails and snacks in a lively and informal atmosphere.

Encompassing 4,000 square metres, the multi-award-winning Dolder Grand Spa offers a unique range of activities for guests’ well-being. Dynamic lines, carefully selected materials and exciting lighting effects combine to produce an inspirational environment that appeals to all senses. The Aqua Zone houses a large swimming pool with a view of the natural surroundings, a reclining area with outdoor whirlpools, sanarium, steam bath and a snow paradise for cooling off. Guests experience relaxation Japanese-style in the wonderfully warm pebbles of the sunaburo. Two separate areas, the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Spa, each offer a sauna, steam bath, kotatsu foot bath, aroma pool, steam pot, cold-water basin and solarium. Children must be at least 12 years of age and accompanied by an adult for admission to the Spa.

The relaxation area, the hanging lounger chairs in the chillout area and the meditation area with its fascinating mirror mosaic dome are the perfect places to find some calm. The reception area is home to a library containing 600 books in German and English, Hairstyling, Spa Café and Spa Shop with beauty products, accessories and gift items.

The exclusive Spa is characterised by the architecture of Foster + Partners, the interior design by United Designers and the advice from the American spa expert Sylvia Sepielli.

The philosophy: the Dolder Grand Life Balance
The Dolder Grand Life Balance is based on the programmes Relax, Beauty, Vitality and Detox. Whatever your situation in life, you have to find the right balance in order to achieve physical and mental well-being and relaxation. The programmes help guests with this. They select treatments that match their needs and can also order drinks and meals in the Spa Café. There are 20 different treatment rooms available for a wide selection of treatments including facials, manicures, massages and body rituals as well as two luxurious Spa Suites for exclusive, private relaxation. All treatments are administered using the lines of cosmetics La Prairie, Kerstin Florian and Amala (containing 100% natural ingredients).

Indoor and outdoor activities
All indoor and outdoor activities are part of the fitness area. Fitness coaches and personal trainers are available to provide an introduction to using the equipment and also offer individual training. The large fitness room is equipped with a cardiovascular area and machines. Courses are held in the Mind-Body and Movement Studios. Outdoor activities such as walking or jogging can be undertaken under the instruction and supervision of a personal trainer.

Medical Wellness
The Dolder Grand has a professional Medical Wellness offering, which complies with medical principles and takes into account a person’s aesthetic requirements. Specialists from the Aesthetic+Health Link network of doctors are on hand to provide comprehensive advice and carry out treatments in anti-aging medicine, aesthetic dermatology and laser medicine, as well as aesthetic plastic surgery.

ART COLLECTION AT THE DOLDER GRAND
Since the reopening of the Dolder Grand in 2008, over 100 prestigious works of art have graced the premises of this luxury hotel in Zurich. The most striking piece is arguably Andy Warhol’s “Big Retrospective Painting”, spanning 11 metres, which takes pride of place above the reception. Guests are guided through the collection with the help of an iPad application. It is not every hotel lobby that allows guests to marvel at works of art as exclusive as Andy Warhol’s “Big Retrospective Painting” while they enjoy coffee and cake or engage in business discussions. And this is not the only famous piece that guests can discover during their stay at the Dolder Grand.

Since its renovation and conversion by Foster + Partners, the luxury hotel in Zurich has impressed with its high-quality architecture and exquisitely finished interior design created by London-based United Designers. Over 100 works of art now adorn the Dolder Grand, imparting an even more exclusive atmosphere to the City Resort.

Salvador Dalí, Fernando Botero, Jean Tinguely
Most of the works of art can be found in the public rooms. Some, however, are reserved for hotel guests on the individual floors that host the rooms. Salvador Dalí’s “Femmes métamorphosées – Les sept arts”  greets diners as they make their way into The Restaurant (18 GaultMillau points, 2 Michelin stars). As they approach the Spa, guests encounter the distinctive “Le Monde” by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, and Fernando Botero’s opulent “Woman with fruit” lends a playful air to the spa terrace. Joan Miró, Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami ... the list of famous artists represented is long.

Art iPad: a wholly modern art tour guide
The Dolder Grand offers its guests an art iPad to guide them through the artworks on display in the Hotel. The iPad with the specially designed application contains information on more than 100 works of art by 90 different artists, and is available from reception. iPad users can sort the list by work or by location, find out more about the artists, and access a map showing the positions of the works.

The signature style of Lord Norman Foster
From 2004 to 2008, the Dolder Grand was converted and renovated. The renowned London-based architecture practice Foster + Partners combined the Hotel’s historic Main Building of 1899 with modern architectural accoutrements. Two new wings – the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing – enclose the fully restored Main Building, tangibly linking past and future. The original “Curhaus” dating from 1899 presents itself anew as the luxury class City Resort with 175 luxurious rooms and suites, exquisite cuisine, a spa encompassing 4,000 square metres and generous banqueting and seminar facilities. The Hotel’s elevated location between pulsating city and invigorating nature provides guests with magnificent views over Zurich, the lake and the Alps.

Wine at the Dolder Grand
The wine list comprises around 500 wines, with prices per bottle ranging between CHF 50.00 and CHF 3,000.00 for rarities. The Restaurant pays particular attention to its wine selection. More than 1,200 bottles are stored in the specially designed wine cube. The Restaurant’s wine menu boasts 100 white and 250 red wines as well as around 30 different kinds of champagnes. While these are primarily sourced from Europe, the wine list also includes vintages from overseas.


THINGS TO DO IN ZURICH

Grossmünster
The imposing church with its two towers is a Zurich landmark. Legend has it that Charlemagne had the first church erected as a monastery on the graves of the city’s patron saints Felix and Regula. In the first half of the sixteenth century, Grossmünster was the starting point of the Reformation in German-speaking Switzerland under Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger. The theological school, which at the time was part of the monastery, would go on to become the University of Zurich. The glass windows by Sigmar Polke, the Roman Catholic crypt, the choir windows by Augusto Giacometti, the bronze doors by Otto Münch and the Reformation museum in the cloister are just some of the many sights worth seeing at Grossmünster.
 
Uetliberg
Zurich’s landmark mountain rises up in the west of the city. Those who scale the peak of the Uetliberg (871 metres above sea level) can enjoy a magnificent 360-degree view out over the city and the lake, and reaching as far as the Alps. In summer, the Uetliberg is the starting point for signposted hiking and biking trails, as well as the Planetenweg (planet trail). This two-hour hike leads to the station of the Adliswil–Felsenegg cable car in Adliswil and provides a fascinating insight into our solar system. Some of the routes are transformed into exciting toboggan runs in the winter.
 
Town hall
The first town hall was built on the eastern bank of the Limmat over 700 years ago. The current and third building replaced its wooden predecessor at the end of the seventeenth century. The town hall built across the water has been preserved extensively in its original state. While incorporating baroque elements, its basic features are Renaissance inspired, and the building’s interior also brings together a range of styles. A permanent exhibition of historical artefacts and artworks tells the story of political life in Zurich.
 
Le Corbusier Pavillon
The final building to be designed by Le Corbusier is located on Lake Zurich. The world-famous Swiss architect planned the cube at Zürichhorn as an exhibition space for his collection of artworks – including everything from sketches and drawings to oil paintings, sculptures and furniture. When designing the Pavillon, which was inaugurated in 1967, Le Corbusier did away with concrete for the first time and created a building structure comprising only steel and glass. He remained true to his philosophy of “new architecture”, however, and constructed the supporting framework using flexible and modular elements using inexpensive and functional industrial materials. The roof appears separate from the building structure, hovering over it like an umbrella. Coloured enamel panels give the exterior of the cube a rhythmical structure.

ETH, University and Polyterrasse
The imposing Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich was constructed in 1864 from plans drawn up by Gottfried Semper. The University of Zurich was established 50 years later in an adjacent and no less impressive edifice, and is today frequented by over 30,000 students and staff daily. The Polybahn takes you up from Central to the Polyterrasse in front of the main building of the ETH in just a few minutes. From this terrace you can enjoy superb views of Zurich’s old town.
 
Lindenhof
In the fourth century, a Roman fort stood on Lindenhof – 500 years later, Charlemagne’s grandson built a regal palace on the very same site. This area continued to be a place for gatherings by Zurich’s residents right up to the beginning of the modern era, with the oath sealing the Helvetic Constitution being taken here in 1798. Today, Lindenhof is a haven of peace and tranquillity, high above the west bank of the Limmat in the heart of the city, and a popular vantage point offering a spectacular view of the old town with the Grossmünster and town hall.
 
Urania Sternwarte
The Urania Sternwarte enables visitors to have a fascinating view of the cosmos through a telescope installed at the top of the 48-metre-high circular tower which magnifies the celestial bodies 600 times. Once you have examined the craters of the moon or taken a closer look at the gas clouds on Jupiter, you can continue your journey of discovery in the Jules Verne Bar, where the panoramic windows directly below the observatory offer a unique view of the city.
 
Fraumünster
Founded in 853 by King Louis the German, this church with its convent was inhabited by the female members of Europe’s aristocracy. The convent had considerable influence and enjoyed the patronage of many kings, and up until the thirteenth century the abbess had the right to mint coins. Ownership of the church and convent passed to the city of Zurich after the Reformation. Important architectural features include the Romanesque chancel and the high-vaulted transept. The north windows of the transept were designed by Augusto Giacometti, and the five-part cycle in the chancel and rosette in the southern transept is the work of Marc Chagall. The cloister also houses a series of frescos by Paul Bodmer.

Niederdorf
The Niederdorf quarter in the old town on the east bank of the Limmat is fondly referred to by locals as the “Dörfli” (little village). Like the Limmatquai, which runs parallel to it, Niederdorf is a pedestrian zone. During the day, the many small shops hidden down the alleyways entice you to browse and shop, while in the evening Niederdorf and the neighbouring Oberdorf transform into a thriving destination for a diverse crowd of visitors with a host of restaurants, bars and clubs. The popular “Dörflifäscht” (village festival) with its DJs, market stalls, culinary delights, shows and live music is held at the end of August each year.
 
Paradeplatz
Known worldwide as the centre of Switzerland’s financial sector, Paradeplatz is also the heart of Bahnhofstrasse and an important interchange for the tram network near the lake. It was referred to as the “Säumärt” (pig market) in the seventeenth century, owing to a livestock market that was regularly held there. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the name was changed to Neumarkt (new market) and then, 50 years later, to Paradeplatz. Zurich’s old town, Lake Zurich and Bahnhofstrasse can all be reached from Paradeplatz.

Lake Zurich
When promenading became fashionable in Zurich around 1800, the largest public park in Zurich at the time was developed around the lower basin of Lake Zurich, and the city was transformed from the small town by the river to the city by the lake. The lakeside promenades are a meeting place for in-line skaters, bathers, jewellery sellers and street artists, who all gather here to create a colourful scene.
The panorama terrace at Bürkliplatz is in the middle of the lakeside promenade, and is a great location for admiring the other lakeside park areas of Mythenquai, General-Guisan-Quai, Utoquai and Seefeldquai. The Chinese Garden, a gift from Zurich’s twin city Kunming, is at the end of Seefeldquai.



CULTURE IN ZURICH
With over 50 museums and 100 galleries, Zurich is considered to be one of the world’s leading cities of art. The orchestras at the Tonhalle and the Opera House, as well as the renowned Zurich Chamber Orchestra, offer musical entertainment at its very best.

Kunsthaus Zürich
Kunsthaus Zürich is a must for all friends of the fine arts – it is home to one of the most significant collections in Europe and notable temporary exhibitions. Highlights at the gallery include the largest Munch collection outside Norway, paintings by Picasso, Monet and Chagall and by expressionists such as Kokoschka, Beckmann and Corinth, as well as works by Alberto Giacometti. Also on display are pop art pieces and works by Rothko, Merz, Twombly, Beuys, Bacon and Baselitz.

Swiss National Museum
The Swiss National Museum, which is located next to the Hauptbahnhof, contains Switzerland’s largest collection of artefacts detailing the cultural history of Switzerland. The museum building is over 100 years old, and the exhibits housed within it bring the past to life, with material legacies – from works of art to everyday objects – providing an insight into how Switzerland’s past generations lived. The museum also regularly addresses socially relevant issues in its special exhibitions.

Museum Rietberg
The Museum Rietberg takes visitors on a trip around the world – the museum’s treasures range from “magical” sculptures from Africa to Buddhist art from Asia and cultural artefacts from the South Pacific and the Americas. A series of fascinating special exhibitions is held at the Rietberg Museum to provide interesting insights into individual cultures. In summer, the café offers visitors picnic baskets for an enjoyable afternoon in one of Zurich’s most beautiful parks.

Museum für Gestaltung
As a partner to the Zurich University of the Arts, the Museum für Gestaltung maintains four important collections covering the areas of design, graphic design, applied art and posters, as well as a library that is open to the public. Temporary exhibitions are held to make visitors aware of how design permeates every aspect of our daily lives. An internationally renowned collection of applied art is housed at the Bellerive Museum in the Seefeld district.

Zurich Opera House
Seating around 1,100 guests, the Zurich Opera House is one of the world’s smallest great opera houses, and at the same time one of the best – in 2014, it was named Opera Company of the Year at the International Opera Awards. The diverse schedule encompasses not only well-loved operas and operettas, but also the premieres of new works, children’s operas and ballet evenings. International stars such as Cecilia Bartoli, Diana Damrau, Joyce DiDonato, Anna Netrebko, Emily Magee, Nina Stemme, Stephen Gould, René Pape, Matti Salminen and Klaus Florian Vogt, as well as conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Fabio Luisi and Carlo Rizzi, are regular features at the Zurich Opera House.

Schiffbau
This used to be a place where steamboats and motorboats were built. Today, the former factory dominates the lively cultural scene in the west of Zurich. In addition to its main stage at Heimplatz in the city centre, the Schauspielhaus Zürich has three more theatre stages in this listed building, and the diverse programme on offer at the Schiffbauhalle, the Box and the Matchbox is renowned throughout Europe. The Moods jazz club, LaSalle restaurant and Nietturm bar can also be found at the Schiffbau.

Theater Neumarkt
Theater Neumarkt in the centre of Zurich’s old town focuses on contemporary performance art. Three times a season, the theatre turns its attention to a new thematic area, which it proceeds to analyse in a range of different pieces. This temporary focus enables the theatre to examine its chosen themes from various perspectives.

Tonhalle Zürich
The Tonhalle Zürich concert venue has some of the best acoustics in the world. The famous concert hall, which can seat 1,455 people, was built in 1895 and inaugurated in the presence of Johannes Brahms. In recent years, the Tonhalle Orchestra has developed into one of Europe’s leading ensembles. The orchestra comprises around 100 musicians and has been conducted by Lionel Bringuier since 2014. It performs around 100 concerts every season with approximately 50 different programmes.


SHOPPING IN ZURICH

Bahnhofstrasse
What 150 years ago was a trench that formed part of the city fortifications is now Bahnhofstrasse, the 1.4-kilometre-long street that today stretches from the Hauptbahnhof to the lake. This shopping mile with its numerous boutiques, watch and jewellery shops and department stores is equally popular among locals and visitors. Rennweg and Augustinergasse lead from Bahnhofstrasse to the picturesque old town on the west bank of the Limmat.

Im Viadukt
The 36 arches of the railway viaduct constructed in 1894 in the west of Zurich have been transformed into a shopping paradise in recent years – with a diverse mix of delicatessens, studios, galleries and sport and fashion boutiques spread over a distance of 500 metres, inviting visitors to stroll, shop, eat and drink. The heart of this new urban meeting place is the Markthalle, where 20 farmers and grocers from Zurich and the surrounding area offer their wares.

Europaallee
Europaallee is located right next to Zurich Hauptbahnhof. A new quarter, scheduled to be completed by 2020, is being built here, parts of which are already enticing visitors with their wide variety of shopping facilities. All along Lagerstrasse, the flagship stores of well-known brands rub shoulders with trendy boutiques featuring innovative concepts. Whether you are looking for sustainably produced yoga outfits, up-and-coming Swiss fashion labels, sports and outdoor equipment, handmade leather shoes or urban gardening tools – in the new Europaallee quarter you will find fashion and lifestyle articles of all kinds.

Sihlcity
The Sihlcity shopping and leisure centre was built on a former industrial site in the Enge quarter in 2007. A 65-metre-high brick chimney and three other buildings have been successfully integrated into this city within a city – harkening back to the days of paper manufacture. Visitors can enjoy themselves at one of the restaurants and bars, or in the Asia Spa wellness centre with Japanese springs and a meditation pool. Entertainment is provided by a multiplex cinema and a nightclub.

Bongénie Grieder
For over a century, Bongénie Grieder has been known for its excellent choice of fashion garments, stocking international names and designer labels for both men and women. The store also offers lingerie and stockings, an exclusive home boutique, Benjamin Fourrures furs and accessories such as jewellery, leather goods, shoes and scarves.

Jelmoli
Zurich’s largest premium department store was designed in 1899, inspired by similar departments stores in Paris and London, and ranks among the city’s most sophisticated shopping destinations. Visitors to the “House of Brands” on Bahnhofstrasse can find a range of top brands for men, women and children, a renowned perfumery and a wide selection of sport articles and home products. The Food Market located below ground level offers several highlights, including a select range of food and wines – and Switzerland’s first cheese humidor.

Bally
The exclusive flagship store of the international luxury brand is located on Bahnhofstrasse. Alongside fashionable and creative footwear for men and women, visitors to Bally will also find a large selection of handbags, luggage and accessories made from the highest quality leather.

Confiserie and Café Sprüngli
Melt-in-your-mouth truffles, light and delicate “Luxemburgerli” (macaroons), hand-made dark chocolate and lovingly decorated tarts and cakes are just a sample of the many sweet and tempting offers at the café of Confiserie Sprüngli at Paradeplatz. The classically designed café is also known throughout the city for its gourmet brunch buffet with home-made bread, fresh jams and marmalades and delicious muesli with cream.

THINGS TO DO IN SWITZERLAND

Matterhorn
The Matterhorn is synonymous with Switzerland – the pyramid-shaped mountain, which can only be scaled by experienced alpinists, is thought to be the world’s most frequently photographed. Nearby is the Klein Matterhorn, which is accessible by cable car and offers a spectacular view of its big brother.
 
The Rhine Falls
Europe’s biggest waterfall can be reached both from the Zurich side and the Schaffhausen side of the Rhine, and offers visitors a truly memorable experience: those standing on the viewing platforms or the mighty rocks in the middle of the river, which can be reached by boat, can feel the thundering mass of water through their whole body.
 
Creux du Van
Located on the border between the cantons of Neuchâtel and Vaud is a natural amphitheatre-like rock formation of magnificent proportions: the 160-metre-high vertical cliff faces of Creux du Van form the outline of a cirque that is four kilometres long and more than one kilometre wide.
 
Jungfraujoch
Visitors come here to experience close-up views of the monumental Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, as well as the longest glacial flow in the Alps. For over 100 years now, the Jungfrau railway has been travelling to Jungfraujoch – Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454 metres above sea level – along a route consisting of many tunnels.

San Salvatore
The striking mountain to the south of Lugano offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view. Once you have made the trip with the funicular railway from Paradiso, Lugano’s landmark mountain affords fantastic views of the lake, large stretches of northern Italy and the High Alps.
 
Pilatus
It controls the weather, is home to dragons and giants and is the grave of ancient emperors – Lucerne’s landmark mountain is one of the most legendary places in central Switzerland, as well as being one of the most beautiful. On a clear day, Pilatus captivates its visitors with a panoramic view of more than 70 Alpine peaks.
 
The Viamala Gorge
The via mala (bad path) through the deep and menacing gorge along the Hinterrhein was for centuries an obstacle to crossing the Alps and was accordingly reviled. Today, visitors can enjoy the natural environment of this unique gorge from a range of vantage points and explore the area on well-maintained paths.
