Massimo, what do you love most about the region of Tuscany?
The things I love most about the region of Tuscany are it's authenticity, it's calmness, and it's natural beauty. The landscape of Tuscany pleases the heart, and is basically what your eyes are craving to see, and through the eyes, it enters directly into your soul.
How did you decide to open a hotel in Montalcino?
In fact I did not decide, it was the land that chose me. I had no idea that I would go down this path but once I saw, and got involved with this amazing property, it seemed the right and natural thing to do. Truly by chance I came upon it as I was looking for a winery in Montalcino, not such an incredible property. Given it's vast size, and all the real estate located on it, we thought that a hotel/resort where people could come and enjoy the place would be the perfect compliment to the wine activity. There were a lot of buildings that we had to bring back to life and renovate, but now people can come and visit and experience the incredible beauty of the property.
What is the biggest challenge of running a luxury hotel?
The biggest challenge is that no matter how beautiful the place is, or how great the facilities are, true luxury is delivered by the people who run the place. So it is very important to find the right people, and give them the correct training so that they can provide the very best experience to our guests.
What does luxury mean to you?
In my eyes, true luxury is when you are able to be yourself in a place that is true, and authentic to the location. Also, I don't feel luxury is something lavish but rather think that luxury is to experience something unique that maybe not everyone is able to experience. Our goal at Castiglion del Bosco is to have someone experience the "real Tuscany" from a privileged seat like being in the front row of a show or concert.
What is your favourite holiday destination in the world?
When not in Tuscany, my favorite thing to do is to spend time on the sea. My ideal vacation is to be on a boat in the seas of Italy and Greece.
