An inspiring interview, exclusively for Hurlingham Travel, with Francesca Tozzi, the General Manager at Capri Tiberio Palace, a luxury boutique hotel on the stunningly beautiful Italian island of Capri.

Francesca, how long have you been with the Capri Tiberio Palace?

I started my journey in Capri 8 years ago, right after the new company took over and had started the winter refurbishment of the hotel, which has completely redesigned the style and the service philosophy of Capri Tiberio Palace.

What is it that you love most about being the General Manager of this luxury hotel?

What I love the most is to have participated to the property growth, thanks to our daily commitment and long term programs. This attitude led us to become among the best hotels in Capri and Amalfi Coast area, giving us the chance to host worldwide luxury discerning travellers. This keeps us striving to constantly challenge my team and I to think out of the box and do our best.

Can you please briefly describe the style of the hotel?

The hotel has a contemporary and eclectic style, with touches of a retro feeling from the Caprese glorious Dolce Vita period a tribute paid to the celebrities who lived those days the blue island.

All the rooms and suites are uniquely designed, each corner tells its own story.

How do you see the Capri and the Amalfi Coast markets evolving over the next three to five years?

Capri and the Amalfi Coast keep being among the top destinations in the Italian market. I believe that the biggest challenge nowadays is to create sustainable conditions in order to regulate mass tourism that mostly damages the environment, the image and the mood of the area. The most important matter is to preserve our land and its beautiful natural landscape.

What is your favourite restaurant on the island?

My favourite restaurant on the island is Terrazza Tiberio…obviously. But if I have to pick another then I'd probably go for Le Grottelle, the one of the few where homemade cusine is still available.

And where to have a good espresso with some freshly baked pastries?

The best espresso is served from "Alberto" in my opinion, while for pastries and ice cream I’d go for "Buonocore".

What are the top 3 things that you would recommend for your guests to do while in Capri?

I believe that Capri has many treasures to be discovered, that is why it is necessary to stay on the island a minimum of 3 full days to allow travellers to experience at least my top three:

1. Boat Tour of the island with all the caves;
2. Enjoy aperitivo by the sunset at il Faro;
3. Follow the emperors path from Mt. Tiberio to Villa Jovis and Villa Lysis or from Capri to Anacapri with "La Scala Fenicia" until the top of Mt. Solaro.

Can you please tell us a a lesser-known fact about Capri?

Capri has many myths and legends which are familiar to the locals but not to the tourists.

The main one is related to the island's signature animal, the blue lizard, which actually exists for real, but you can only find it on the "Outside" Faraglione. There is also the legend of the Dark Grotto, a hidden cave, marvelous as the Blue Grotto, which has seen its entrance completely obstructed by rocks during the 19th century.
