I have recently returned from the beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira which is situated approximately 250 miles north of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
It truly is an amazing place of many contrasts, with a wonderful temperate climate of average 16 degrees in the winter to 24 degrees in the summer.
You can easily spend a week exploring, the stunning mountains, the gorgeous little villages, and of course the capital Funchal.
There is something for everyone, if your passion is walking then you can join an organised group to walk through the beautiful scenery of the levada trails which are purpose built irrigation channels that transport the rain water from the wetter north side of the island to the dryer south.
Madeira is a volcanic island which helps to create the perfect growing conditions for countless different exotic plants and fruits. The flowers are spectacular especially in the months of May and June.
If you enjoy a drink then of course there's the famous Madeira wine and the traditional Poncha which is a combination of orange juice, honey and sugar cane rum.
My favourite hotel in Madeira is the magnificent Reid's Palace. It welcomed the first guests in 1891 and ever since has had the reputation as the best luxury hotel in Madeira. You will be incredibly well looked after by the courteous helpful staff and will leave with lasting fond memories of your wonderful holiday.
