We asked Jans Clemens Weiser, 3rd generation hotelier at Ciasa Salares in the Dolomites what the hotel means to him.
Can you tell me the history of how your family acquired Ciasa Salares?
Paolo Wieser and Emma Mayr met in the 1930s in Ortisei, whist both working in a hotel. They got married in 1934 and, after having run an hotel at Monte Piz (Alpe di Siusi), they rented Rosa Alpina in San Cassiano. They bought some land at Armentarola and in 1937 they built their own hotel.
Passion for cuisine and fair attitude were the key features of Emma’s popular cooking classes for wives coming not only from Südtirol, but from other provinces as well. Together with her husband, Emma ran the hotel.
Their son Paolo married Ilda Pizzinini in 1964 – my beloved grandparents. They built their guesthouse consisting of 20 rooms with ensuite toilet facilities. Their son Stefan was born in 1965 (my father actually); he will eventually run the property together with my mum Wilma and me.
Nonna Ilda, a legacy herself, is actively involved in running the hotel which was gradually enlarged with new rooms. In 1968 the building was enriched with the area that now is dedicated to the wine bar. In 1976 the swimming pool was the new facility of this house.
In 1990 my dad succeeded and now runs the property with a special attention to food & wine – his wine cellar is an authentic treasure.
What does hospitality mean to you?
The word “Ciasa” (home, in Ladin) conveys warmth and familiarity. We welcome guests in our home.
What is your favourite thing about Ciasa Salares?
During their stay our guests interact with any member of the family. Everyday we do what we love most, i.e. Nonna Ilda prepares delicious jams early in the morning, Nonno Pauli cures the speck during aperitivo, my mum takes care of decorations and details, my dad is the “brain” in each restaurant, and I really enjoy being the man in the wine cellar and the DJ on the terrace.
Food is a highlight at Ciasa Salares – tell us a little about what makes it so memorable?
Five different restaurants intend to give a 360° perspective about Mediterranean cuisine. Our passion for food continues in the sourcing of the best ingredients to be featured in our dishes. 10 years and here we are with a valuable bunch of suppliers providing their best products.
What do you love particularly about where the hotel is located?
The backdrop of the Dolomites and the secluded position of our Ciasa make it a not to be missed destination for nature lovers. In both winter and summer people come and start their day right after passing the door. A very important fact is that Ciasa Salares is the closest luxury hotel to the entrance of the Natural Park of Fanes.
