What particularly stands out this late-summer and fall are the many high-caliber cultural events and new openings that make Zurich a real hotspot for art and design aficionados.

ART EVENTS IN ZURICH THIS AUTUMN

August 12 to September 5 – Design Biennale

Design enjoys a very high status in Zurich. The Helvetica typeface was invented here, as were also the FREITAG bags and the globally popular running shoes from On. With the Design Biennale, one of the top design events is held in the design metropolis of Zurich. Under the motto, "Clash", the Design Biennale highlights such topics as upcycling, algorithmic design, and virtual reality in 12 installations. In the exhibition, design can also be experienced up close.

August 19 to September 5 – Zürcher Theater Spektakel

For over 40 years, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel on Lake Zurich has been delighting a very diverse public. Internationally renowned theater ensembles, outstanding concerts, and street artists, as well as a variety of food stands, attract visitors to the lakeshore. In 2021, the theater festival will be held on the Landiwiese by Lake Zurich in a somewhat reduced form, but also on stages in other locations in the heart of the city.

September 17 to 19 – Zurich Art Weekend

One week before Art Basel, Zurich is the hotspot for lovers of contemporary art. Major public and private galleries, as well as high-level art institutions, invite visitors to a major exhibition of artworks at the Zurich Art Weekend. With over 100 events in 60 locations, guests are given a broad insight into the contemporary art scene in Switzerland's largest city.

September to October, Reopening of the Zurich Convention Center & Tonhalle

All of Zurich is looking forward to this reopening: the Zurich Convention Center and the Tonhalle are moving back into their history-steeped halls on Lake Zurich. With the Grosse Tonhalle auditorium, The Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich is returning to one of the world’s acoustically finest concert halls in the world. And thanks to the spectacular new terrace with a magnificent view of the lake and the Alpine panorama, the concert experience is far from over after the last note has been played.

September 23 to October 3 – 17th Zurich Film Festival

One of the first highlight events in the newly renovated Tonhalle will be hosted by the Zurich Film Festival. The popular International Film Music Competition will be held in the Tonhalle on September 30. But movie lovers can also look forward to various film competitions, premieres, and gala evenings on the green (yes, in Zurich it is green, not red) carpet.

October 2 & 3 – Open House Zurich

A must for architecture enthusiasts is the fascinating weekend of Open House viewings. On these two days, private houses and buildings that are normally closed to the public open their doors and gates to reveal Zurich's most beautiful and impressive settings. Architectural treasures and design gems are guaranteed.

October 9 & 10 – Opening of the Kunsthaus Extension Building

Finally the time has come! The light-flooded extension building of the Kunsthaus Zürich, designed by David Chipperfield, will be opened with an official ceremony. This new building will make the Kunsthaus the largest art museum in Switzerland. With its aesthetically elegant form, a museum for the 21st century with great charisma and appeal has been created.

October 27 to 31 – Digital Art Zurich

This year, Switzerland's largest festival for digital culture will once again shine with its diverse program in various locations in the center of Zurich. Over the course of five days, around 60 national and international artists will exhibit and perform. In addition to the exhibitions, highlights include the immersive experience at the Museum für Gestaltung, the many concerts, and the DJ/VJ events. In addition, there will be the DA Z Conversations with top speakers.
